Makahiki 2021

Makahiki 2021 - Week 12

Once the statue of Lono had completed his tour around the island, he was returned to his home in the heiau.  The ali’i nui (high chief) would set out on a canoe that evening and return the following morning.  Upon his return, he would need to defend himself against a spear thrown by a waiting warrior.  If he thwarted the spear successfully, he proved himself a strong and deserving ruler to his people.  This ceremony was called a kāliʻi.

The kāhuna would then perform their own ceremony and after a sacrifice had been made, the white kapa used to signal the beginning of Makahiki, was taken down.  This signaled Makahiki season was coming to a close.

In honor of Makahiki 10% of this weeks sales will be donated to Maui Nui Marine Resource Council Inc. Maui Nui Marine Resource Council works for clean ocean water, health coral reefs and an abundance of native fish for the islands of Maui County. Their mission is to bring human actions into balance with ecological principles so that the health and abundance of Maui's nearshore waters can be restored and sustained for future generations.  Learn more about their mission at: https://www.mauireefs.org
